A new release of Couchbase’s Capella delivers a GitHub-like experience that is meant to be familiar for developers, more efficient than its predecessors, and an upgrade that makes it easy to get up and running so that cloud database adoption expands.
The interface emphasizes developer-oriented tasks and curates a journey based on the developer’s level of familiarity and experience.
“I view this as a natural journey of improving the developer experience with easy ways to access and have a standard workflow so it’s easy to navigate and get to goal” — which is starting to build a prototype application, says Scott Anderson, Couchbase’s senior VP, product management.
The company is also detailing initiatives to grow its developer community along with the newest database release taking place today.
New Developer Interface
In developing a new developer navigation experience, Couchbase was looking to shift from a model that was 80% focused on operational tasks and functions and 20% focused on developers. “We’ve flipped that on its head,” Anderson says.
Couchbase used GitHub — which Anderson calls the most popular development tool on the market— as a model or template for its new experience. “We’re trying to use the primary real estate to focus on key development tasks so they can get up and running easy and fast,” Anderson says.
Anderson mentioned three specific items that reflect developer centricity
- The configuration steps to get a cluster and an endpoint up and running have been streamlined with a reduced number of clicks
- The developer can choose an embedded SDK (software development kit) from within the database interface versus having to go outside the UI (user interface)
- Tutorials are embedded directly in the control plane for faster access and utilization, rather than residing on a separate site.
This new release —7.12— also includes the recently introduced high-density storage engine that increased read/write operations by 4x while utilizing up to 10x less memory versus the previous storage engine. It also adds HIPAA compliance — expanding the addressable market to use cases that require HIPAA support — and supports customers in the building of HIPAA-compliant applications.
Expanding Community
A new Couchbase Ambassador Program allows developers to share their knowledge and expertise with broader developer audiences. The program provides tools and resources to facilitate ambassadors speaking at events, organizing community meetups, and creating content to expand the Couchbase community. Any developers interested in joining or learning more can do so here.
A newly launched Couchbase Community Hub is a space for the Couchbase developer community that complements the existing Couchbase Discord server and Couchbase Community Forums. It brings together users and contributors to encourage sharing, learning, and discovery.
