Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily news and commentary show, hosted by Cloud Wars Founder Bob Evans. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the Cloud.
In this Cloud Wars Minute, Bob suggests a key theme that will be expressed at Oracle CloudWorld is what he calls the Industrial Revolution 5.0. He further explains this as Oracle’s “move toward more industry-specific capabilities.”
This Cloud Wars Minute is sponsored by Oracle CloudWorld. From October 17th to 20th in Las Vegas, Oracle will bring together its customers and partners for the first time in a few years, on the heels of it becoming the fastest-growing major cloud provider in the world
00:50 – Bob says Oracle is tackling the Industrial Revolution 5.0 on two fronts. For its mainstream, fusion-cloud applications, Oracle is inserting more industry-specific capabilities while still maintaining its traditional position for those applications. He says these will be “industry-flavored” versions of the company’s already existing line-of-business (LOB) apps.
01:45 – Oracle is placing a greater focus on its industry-specific solutions and placing them into the cloud, says Bob.
02:05 – Bob predicts that we will see a greater desire on the part of companies to see an “end-to-end visibility of operations and end-to-end access to their data.” He says this is an integral component of Oracle’s efforts to convert industry-focused solutions into its LOB apps.
02:49 – Oracle’s efforts here will offer customers a full portfolio of choices as to which applications to utilize, says Bob.
03:01 – A “big element in all of this” is that Larry Ellison, CEO, Oracle, is “fully committed to this,” says Bob. He says Ellison has been “very eloquent” in his discussions about why Oracle’s work over the last few years has led to the development of these industry-specific capabilities.
03:25 – Oracle’s acquisition of Cerner was “the cherry on top” of this work because it demonstrates the benefits of combining deep industry expertise with a company that has been working in these industries for years, says Bob.
