Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily news and commentary show, hosted by Cloud Wars Founder, Bob Evans. The next three minutes are packed with insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the Cloud! Today’s Topic: After Big Q2, Is Oracle Hotter Than Google Cloud?
Highlights
0:15 – Today’s big question is: who’s th e hottest cloud vendor of them all? Google Cloud has been the fastest-growing of the Cloud Wars Top 10 for several quarters, but Oracle saw some massive growth in some of its key applications and infrastructure services in Q2.
0:35 – The Q2 earnings from Oracle were a bit strange. Overall, it reported 22% growth in cloud, which is about half of Google Cloud’s growth rate. But among Fusion apps, Oracle reported 30% growth, with Fusion ERP growing 35%. Their cloud infrastructure business grew more than 50%. And Oracle Cloud Infrastructure consumption revenue was up 86%!
01:35 – A related story we’ve been tracking is that Amazon Web Services has out-grown Microsoft Cloud in revenue for the past two quarters.
02:00 – What both the Oracle numbers and the AWS / Microsoft competition point to is that these cloud vendors’ businesses are changing incredibly quickly. A year ago, was anyone talking about Oracle being in the cloud infrastructure business? Yet now, they have an impressive client list.
02:25 – Plus, Oracle CEO Safra Catz and founder Larry Ellison both talked about industry cloud services on the Oracle earnings call. That’s another quickly evolving dynamic we’ll be tracking.
