00:18 — Wayne recently attended an SAP announcement where officials discussed how information is data plus context. In a typical company, SAP said, data is spread all over the place. SAP mentioned that 80 percent of business intelligence and data warehouse projects is spent gathering data and getting context for it.
01:15 — Enter SAP Datasphere, described as a business data fabric architecture. If you’re an SAP customer, you can think of SAP Datasphere as a new generation of the SAP Data Warehouse Cloud combined with its Business Intelligence Cloud.
01:31 — The SAP Datasphere provides data federation, data lakes, data warehouses, and SAP apps, while preserving the context of the data. The tool also offers a governance layer. SAP emphasized Datasphere’s user access, saying, “Nobody from the top floor to the shop floor should wait for data.”
02:23 — As a data consumer, you don’t need to worry about the process of data stewards in the information technology (IT) department taking tables from various databases and joining them together. Instead, you are presented with a virtual view of multiple databases.
02:55 — SAP Datasphere offers a set of tools that helps the data warehouse and governance teams create a secure, accessible environment that combines transactional and data warehouse data. This is turned into a self-service portal that allows users of all levels to generate reports on demand or for production.
03:30 — The Datasphere is an open ecosystem with an app store. It has four initial partners: Databricks, Collibra, Confluent, and DataRobot. (Databricks is on the Acceleration Economy Top 10 Shortlist of Data Modernization Enablers). Wayne thinks SAP Datasphere is really an opportunity to use data as a competitive weapon.
