When undergoing cloud migration, companies can be exposed to various security vulnerabilities. If they don’t ensure data security, this process can lead to risks, such as costly errors, fraud, and data corruption.
In this Acceleration Case Study, learn how a leading trailer manufacturing company confronted security vulnerabilities after making a cloud migration. By installing solutions by Fastpath, Wilson Trailer Company not only mitigated these risks but also improved business processes and discovered cost-saving opportunities along the way.
Business Challenge – How to Enhance Data Security
Globally, Wilson Trailer is one of the top trailer manufacturers. They host seven plants throughout the Midwest in the United States. For over 25 years, this family-owned business has always focused on using new technology innovations to improve its products and processes. However, Wilson Trailer needed a way to improve data security after upgrading the Microsoft Dynamics AX system.
- While this upgrade enabled them to gain more control over their business process, it also created a few pain points for the company:
- Increased security vulnerabilities and concerns
- Role-based system with Dynamics AX gave each user more access than required
- Segregation of Duties (SOD) risks
Since data security was more of an afterthought for Wilson Trailer, one of their main focuses in upgrading was improving business processes. The company also used external add-on applications. By using this, it enabled employees to gain special access to the database.
It wasn’t too long before the company realized the segregation of duties (SOD) risks. Wilson Trailer fully trusted their staff, but the potential for mistakes was growing. This variety of issues led to Wilson Trailer looking for a better solution.
- After recognizing these vulnerable areas, Wilson Trailer determine their goals for a solution:
- SOD as a key internal control and abilities to review SOD risks
- Limit conflicts inside AX and other third-party add-on applictions
Software Solution – Fastpath Products
While attending a conference, Wilson Trailer’s CIO viewed a demo of Fastpath products. Their tools included Assure, Audit Trail, and Identity Manager. The CIO became immediately impressed with all of its power. So, by the end of the year, the company decided to purchase and install all the solutions by Fastpath.
The installation process only took around 45 minutes. The IT team easily created and implemented the SOD rules related to their business. Using Fastpath solutions made it possible to see Wilson’s Trailers security and access control for each employee. Meanwhile, it also made any of the customizations and third-party security changes that impacted the SQL database.
Wilson Trailer used Fastpath’s solutions for initiating a project to reduce user access. The team at Wilson Trailer began reviewing the current access levels for each user while also identifying any SOD conflicts. Conflict analysis evaluations previously required employees to look at more than 3,000 rows of data per company with each user. These users can access up to seven companies. However, Fastpath Assure automatically analyzed this data for any potential conflicts. They delivered everything in a simple review that’s available on the dashboard. Using this software dramatically cut the workload by 50%. It also makes it easy for the team to review employees’ daily habits to establish the basic role for each person.
The Results
Wilson Trailer is also applying the solution to identify and eliminate any problems with user role access. Using Fastpath enabled them to easily find issues and take care of them before they worsened. Furthermore, the company found additional ways to use Fastpath solutions to help save money and enhance their business processes. Upon looking at the employee roles, it became obvious that many users had more security access than needed to do their jobs. Using Fastpath made it possible to quickly identify which roles gave too much access. This allowed them to remove security access to many of their users.
Using Fastpath solutions also makes it much easier to track any product or vendor changes and much more. For example, many users can modify manufacturing parameters. This can cause problems with pricing or accounting issues in the future. Fastpath’s Audit Trail makes it possible to identify any changes that can cause issues with vendors using projects in other plants. Additionally, using Audit Trail now allows employees to identify duplicate information. This often causes problems with the inventory.
Using all the available tools at Fastpath allows Wilson Trailer to quickly analyze any SOD conflicts while reviewing user access inside their Dynamics AX environment to maintain a proper access level. The additional benefits of using this software became more apparent with further use. Ultimately, the team at Wilson Trailer believes that using this software is a worthwhile investment that can also benefit many other companies. Now, with the help of Fastpath solutions, data is much more secure at Wilson Trailer.
