Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily news and commentary show, hosted by Cloud Wars Founder, Bob Evans. The next three minutes are packed with insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the Cloud! Today’s Topic: Microsoft Acquires Activision Megadeal, Disruption Ahead!
Highlights
0:12 – Talk about growth markets, man! The recent acquisition of Activision by Microsoft for $69 billion is a game-changer for a few key reasons. The high-profile nature of the deal; the new capabilities that Microsoft will have through Activision; and the notion that the Activision CEO talked about in terms of needing purpose-built clouds to handle large communities of digital participants—all of these factors make this deal a major disruption accelerator.
0:50 – One of the big ripple effects of this deal is going to be a nudge for companies across all industries to ask themselves: what business are we in today? It seems like a simple question, but it’s not. As more and more consumers engage with products and services online, companies need to keep up by embracing the merger of the physical and digital worlds. Bob says he doesn’t love the term “metaverse,” but that’s the concept we’re talking about here.
01:33 – Up to this point, the physical half of this merger has been dominant. But the time is coming when the digital realm is going to become more important and central to the lives of consumers.
2:05 – Another quiet example of this increasingly important question—what business are you in today?—is what’s happening in the Cloud Database Battleground. Because as leading database vendors evolve their offerings, this creates massive change not just for the vendors but also for their customers and what they’re able to do. (The Cloud Database Battleground digital event is coming up on January 27th—check it out.)
2:45 – To any business leader who says, ‘this won’t be that different for me and my company,’ Bob offers a word of caution. No industry is going to escape this disruption, so it’s time to make plans to evolve along with it.
